Ask most collectors about sealed vintage and they'll talk booster boxes and packs. Almost nobody talks about tins. That's a mistake. Every collector tin is a sealed time capsule. A promo card on top, and under it, factory sealed booster packs from whatever era the tin shipped in.
A 2009 Charizard G LV.X tin is four sealed D&P and Platinum era packs that have been sitting in a metal shell for over fifteen years.
What's actually in a tin
Since 2003, collector tins have paired collectible cards or inserts with sealed booster packs. Usually one promo, sometimes two, occasionally an art card instead. Plus era extras like sticker sheets, coins, figures, and in the online game era, a code card. The details changed constantly. Which card, how many packs, and from which sets. That's why we built the Tin Contents Database, a tin by tin record of what's inside every tin we've handled. Most rows link a YouTube opening video, so you can watch the exact contents come out of the tin on camera before you buy one sealed.
A quick era tour
- 2003 to 2006, EX Ruby & Sapphire Series: the first US collector tin (five packs, tied for the highest pack count in our database) and the tall EX Deck Tins. Despite the name, they held promos and packs, not decks.
- 2007 to 2009, Diamond & Pearl and Platinum Series: the golden age of the Lv.X tin. Torterra, Infernape, Empoleon, Dialga, Palkia, Darkrai, Charizard G, Garchomp C, Rayquaza C, Arceus. The documented ones carry four packs each (a few assortments are still under verification), and the promos are serious collectibles on their own now.
- 2010, HeartGold SoulSilver Series: Prime tins and the Legendary Beast tins with shiny Raikou, Entei, or Suicune showing through the window.
- 2011 to 2016, Black & White and XY Series: mostly Pokemon-EX tins. Team Plasma trio, Charizard-EX, Legends of Kalos, Powers Beyond. Plus oddballs like the five pack V for Victini tin with a figure inside.
- 2019 to today: TAG TEAM tins with metal GX markers, the Hidden Fates Charizard-GX tin, and the modern mini tin formula.
Why sealed tins are a sleeper buy
- Sealed vintage packs, protected. The packs inside a sealed tin have spent their whole life in a rigid metal shell, shielded from most handling. As with any sealed product, internal condition is never guaranteed.
- The promos aged well. Lv.X, Prime, shiny beasts, and early EX promos are chase cards on their own today.
- The tin itself displays. A vintage tin looks like the era it came from. Half the appeal is the object.
The fine print collectors miss
Tin contents were not perfectly fixed. Pack pools drifted between print waves of the same tin. Retailer exclusives like the Walgreens tins played by their own rules. US and international versions of the same tin sometimes carried entirely different cards. That's why we identify tins by the promo in the window, the UPC, and the bottom production code, never the lid art alone. It's also why every row in our database carries a verification status.
